Featured artist Jasmine Novack is a self-taught painter, underwater photographer, and cold-water scuba diver from Seattle. She is also a member of the All Water team. With artwork on display at the Seattle Art Museum, she draws inspiration from her underwater explorations, including the kelp forests off the local coastline. Raised with her twin sister by their Filipino mother just blocks from the beach, Novack didn’t begin to explore the depths of her neighborhood waters until adulthood. Her mother, having grown up in the tropics, often warned that the Pacific Northwest seas were cold and dangerous. Graduating with a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Washington, Novack concentrated on marine science and environmental justice, with a particular focus on the Salish Sea. That knowledge gave her the confidence to navigate the challenging, murky conditions of local dives and continues to fuel her creative work today. Her paintings, some of which can be found displayed throughout Hotel 1000, reflect her journey of self-discovery. They explore her relationship with the ocean, the fears it symbolizes, and the ways those fears can hold us back from fully experiencing life.
