STUDIO SESSIONS
SAM IN THE STUDIO
Hotel 1000 and the Seattle Art Museum (SAM), neighbors on downtown Seattle's eclectic First Avenue between Pioneer Square and Pike Place Market, will present the "In the Studio"speaker series on every other first Wednesday of the month. The series will coincide with the schedule of special exhibitions at SAM and give visitors and locals an insider's view into the collections of one of the world's most celebrated and revered museums. Each month, guests are invited to the STUDIO 1000 at Hotel 1000 for a reception featuring a curator or special guest speaker from SAM, who will give a presentation accompanied by visuals on PowerPoint on one of SAM's current exhibitions. Each event in the series will begin with a reception starting at 5:00 pm and then the curator will start at 5:30 p.m. and feature hors d'oeuvres from BOKA KITCHEN + BAR with wine proceeds benefiting SAM.
Wednesday, April 21, 2010
Join Curatorial Research Associate for Japanese and Korean Art, Catherine Roche, as she discusses "Fleeting Beauty: Japanese Woodblock Prints." This exhibition brings together prints from the most renowned ukiyo-e artists of the 18th and 19th centuries-including Harunobu, Utamaro, Eishi and Hiroshige-along with Hokusai's most beloved prints, Great Wave off Kanagawa and Red Fuji. Drawn from the Mary and Allan Kollar Collection, a promised gift to the Seattle Art Museum on the occasion of its 75th Anniversary, this installation introduces the region to a remarkable collection of prints, all taken from early impressions and in excellent condition. The exhibition will be opened at SAM on Thursday, April 1 - Sunday, July 4, 2010.
Wednesday, May 19, 2010
Join the Jon and Mary Shirley Curator of Modern & Contemporary Art, Michael Darling, as he discusses "Kurt." Grunge music is arguably Seattle's greatest cultural export of the past 20 years, and Kurt Cobain was that movement's central figure. International in scope, the works on view in this exhibition range from straightforward portraiture to pieces that show a more subtle assimilation of Cobain's ethos and idealism in a broad range of media. Kurt includes works from artists such as Rodney Graham, Douglas Gordon and Elizabeth Peyton. The exhibition will be opened at SAM on Thursday, May 13 - Monday, September 6, 2010.
Wednesday, June 9, 2010
Join Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Marisa C. Sánchez, as she discusses "Love, Fear, Pleasure, Lust, Pain, Glamour, Death - Andy Warhol Media Works." Offering a focused and provocative experience of Warhol's photography and film portraits, this exhibition includes Polaroids, photobooth strips and sewn photographs, presented alongside Warhol's Screen Tests. The exhibition includes works that compel the public to consider the artist's fascination with all things ephemeral, from beauty and youth to celebrity status including photographs and videos from 1960-1980 -two decades in which the artist's work had tremendous impact on contemporary art production and culture. The exhibition will be opened at SAM on Thursday, May 13 - Monday, September 6, 2010.
