Ready, Set, Publish! The Business of Books Series Continues at Hotel 1000 with Industry Experts Kerry Colburn and Jennifer Worick

All new series of talks help aspiring authors navigate the world of publishing; topics including “Pick Your Publisher,” “The Art of the Book Deal” and “What Makes a Book a Bestseller?”

SEATTLE – (April 4, 2011) – Hotel 1000, downtown Seattle’s premier luxury hotel, partners with two successful local authors and former publishing executives Kerry Colburn and Jennifer Worick to offer a continuation of their series of workshops for aspiring authors titled “The Business of Books with Jen & Kerry.” Bringing nearly 40 years of experience and 40 published books between the two of them, Colburn and Worick created this lively series of talks to offer insight, inspiration and tools for navigating the world of publishing.

Created due to popular demand, this new series of talks will focus on helping authors choose their publishing path, become well-versed in the industry and maximize their book’s success. Each event in the series will take place in Hotel 1000’s intimate Corner Room setting and features a presentation hosted by Colburn and Kerry on a specific topic relating to the book business. This is a three-part series offered in April, May and June 2011; schedule is as follows:

  • Thursday, April 28; 7-9 p.m.:
    Join Colburn and Worick as they discuss how to “Pick Your Publisher.” There are so many different publishing choices for authors today: large publisher, niche publishing house, e-book, print-on-demand, self-publishing. This talk will focus on how to select the best publishing route for each unique book idea, highlighting the pros and cons of each.

  • Thursday, May 26; 7-9 p.m.:
    Join Colburn and Worick in their next installment as they discuss “The Art of the Book Deal.” This talk will focus on the business side of publishing, including key contract points, advances and royalties, options, and how the publisher’s sales and marketing plans affect each book. Attendees will leave armed with all the tools needed to secure the best possible deal from a publisher.br />

  • Thursday, June 30; 7-9 p.m.:
    Join Colburn and Worick in their final installment as they discuss “What Makes a Book a Bestseller?” In this talk, Colburn and Worick will share their insight on how and why books land on the bestseller list. Attendees will learn how to maximize their book’s sales potential, how publishers target books with breakout sales potential and create demand in surprising ways.

The three-part series illuminates each step of the proposal process from turning an idea into a book proposal to effectively distributing, marketing and selling a book once it’s been published. “The Business of Books with Jen & Kerry” Proposal Series schedule is as follows:

  • Secrets of a Successful Proposal – Thursday, May 12; 7-9 p.m.

Kerry Colburn is a Seattle-based author, editor, columnist, cocktail drinker, and mom of two young girls.
